Space Ordinals are designed to remain readable when damaged, rotated, or partially obscured.

Protected by the Circle

In cut-vinyl signage, labels, and decals, the most common point of failure is the sharp corner. Sharp corners concentrate mechanical stress, catch on edges, and give wind, water, or handling a place to start peeling the material. Once a corner lifts, the failure often spreads.

Industry practice has long recognized this. Sign makers and sticker manufacturers consistently recommend rounded corners or fully curved shapes because they eliminate the weak points where damage begins. Circles, ovals, and forms with broad curved edges are among the most durable geometries for adhesive graphics.

Every Space Ordinal is enclosed in a continuous outer circle. That circle acts as a protective boundary: it has no sharp external corners for peeling to start, and it shields the interior line segments that carry the numerical meaning. The result is a symbol that is inherently more resistant to the kinds of edge damage that destroy conventional lettering and open shapes.

Readable Even When Heavily Defaced

The meaning of a Space Ordinal is determined by a simple rule: count the line segments inside the circle. Because the value is carried by the number of segments rather than by a complex pattern, large portions of the symbol can be missing and the number can still be recovered.

More importantly, each symbol has a unique arrangement of segments — including their spacing and the angles at which they meet the outer circle. This distinctive geometry means that even when 70–80% of the segments are missing or destroyed, it is often still obvious which of the ten symbols originally occupied the space. The remaining fragments retain enough of the characteristic pattern to allow confident identification.

The outer circle further helps by giving the eye a stable reference frame, even when most of the interior has been lost.

Comparison with QR Codes

Standard QR codes use Reed-Solomon error correction with four levels. The highest level (Level H) can recover from approximately 30% damage. Beyond that threshold, most QR codes become unreadable.

Space Ordinals rely on a different principle — discrete, countable geometric features with unique spatial arrangements — and can frequently remain identifiable at significantly higher levels of defacement. This makes them particularly suitable for environments where symbols may be scratched, partially covered, weathered, or otherwise degraded.
